Visual storytelling with grassroots knowledge and community action

I'm really proud of this community-led project with Climate Change Balmain Rozelle which sought to identify climate action priorities locally. I really admire CCBR, not only because they have celebrated 20 years yesterday (an amazing feat for a community group run by volunteers!) but also because of their foresight and creativity in all that they do.

For this project, there were three steps:

1. A community forum last year where feedback was sought from the community on three main topics - greening, energy and transport. I did the graphic recording at this forum to capture the main points and ideas raised by the locals who attended.

2. A process of synthesising and workshopping this to highlight the climate action areas that were identified as a priorities.

3. The creation of these banners to visually communicate these climate action priorities - an iterative process between myself and CCBR. They launched these banners at CCBR's 20th year anniversary party yesterday and they will be used on stalls in the future to generate more conversations with the community about what climate action looks like in the inner west.

I truly believe the big achievements of the future in the climate space are going to come from community and grassroots action, they always have. If you are working with community, why not integrate an artist / visual storyteller specialist into the process to help communicate you work in an engaging way?

Happy Birthday CCBR! Here's to another 20 years!
